Life before
A 2024 graduate from our IYCP program, Danielle a young BAME woman from Lambeth, had complicated obstacles in both her personal and professional spheres. Having been unemployed for over 2 years and sharing with us that she feels socially isolated, Danielles confidence in changing her situation was at a low. Coming from a low-income background and on universal credit, the compounding disadvantages she faced were impeding her ability to articulate her aspirations effectively. Her reluctance towards public speaking hindered her confidence when applying and attempting to interview for job-seeking roles.

the journey
Participation in the attending IYCP proved transformative for Danielle. Over the course of 3-6 months in early 2024, Danielle attended our core IYCP programme, engaging in structured creative activities and group workshops, she honed valuable presentation skills and familiarised herself with design software to boost her employability skills like Canva. We asked Danielle what do you think is the most valuable skill you gained on the programme and she said that “it desensitised my aversion to public speaking and helped me put my dreams and goals into action”. A key highlight for Danielle was that she formed new friendship groups that she is still in touch with 1 year later, having shared they met up as a cohort to go to the cinema together - breaking social isolation barriers for those isolated has proven to be a key outcome for our intervention.
Real impact
Danielle completed our IYCP programme with newfound assurance and self-belief. Within the 2 months of graduating, she navigated job interviews with greater confidence and successfully secured employment at London Care, a leading provider of care services across London and South East England. Danielle is still in touch with our job coach and has shared with us that she has developed a proactive pursuit of skill development, exemplified by enrolling in technology coding classes, to further boost her skills and employability. Danielle shared that this programme “has made me feel more confident about myself and my future”. This is a real testament to the importance of essential skills development for young people, and breaking social isolation barriers.
